Working with Yumpingo clients, our team identified high-impact upselling opportunities that increased the average spend per guest. We achieved this by analyzing their service touchpoint data (including where brands offered drinks and appetizers, or promoted dessert). 

For instance, simply offering additional drinks during a visit can increase the average bill by US$4.39 or 6.8%—a small but significant boost that builds revenue and enhances the guest experience.

Key Opportunities for Upselling

A few well-timed offers can make a real difference. Using Yumpingo’s data to find those specific interactions that can lift revenue and guest satisfaction alike, I’ve set out below some of them that you could start applying now.

Desserts, Coffee, or Tea

Prompting guests with a dessert or coffee offer towards the end of their meal can add US$13.11 (or 20.4%) to the average check. Dessert orders peak in the evening, so knowing the optimal timing helps increase the likelihood of acceptance.

Drinks and Nibbles to Start

Offering drinks and appetizers early in the meal enhances the dining experience and can raise the average bill by US$4.97. Adding nibbles as an option, for instance, helps boost initial spend while encouraging guests to enjoy a relaxed start to their meal.

Drinks Upselling Throughout the Visit

Yumpingo’s data shows a clear increase in revenue when additional drinks are suggested as the meal progresses. For example, upselling cocktails and spirits brings impressive results, with cocktails showing a 39% increase and spirits a remarkable 113% when proactively offered. These well-placed drink suggestions enhance the guest experience and contribute meaningfully to the overall spend and can make a dramatic improvement to your NPS.
